Our Story

Born from Survival.
Driven by Data.

Check My Flow Foundation exists because Black women are dying from preventable blood clot complications — and the healthcare system keeps looking away.

Shaneé Childs-Beavers

"I am channeling this survival and grief into a national organization dedicated to saving lives."

Shaneé Childs-Beavers is a blood clot survivor who experienced firsthand the terrifying reality of medical negligence. She visited multiple emergency rooms with clear, documented symptoms — and was repeatedly dismissed, misdiagnosed, and sent home.

Her story is not unique. Across the country, Black women are being turned away from emergency rooms, their symptoms minimized, their pain dismissed — and they are dying from entirely preventable blood clot complications at rates that demand urgent action.

That injustice became the catalyst for Check My Flow Foundation — a national organization demanding that every patient, regardless of race or income, receives the diagnostic care they deserve.

Research & Data

The Crisis We Can't Ignore

Black women are dying from preventable blood clot complications at a rate that demands immediate action. The data is clear. The solutions exist. The system is failing them.

3–4×
More Likely to Die

Black women are 3–4x more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women.

Higher VTE Rate

Black women face nearly double the rate of pregnancy-associated VTE (blood clots) compared to other races.

60%
Preventable Deaths

60% of these deaths are preventable with proper care — the right test, at the right time.

The New Standard of Care

Demand the D-Dimer

Immediate blood testing for any symptomatic mother in the ER. A simple, inexpensive test that can detect a forming clot before it becomes fatal.

Post-Surgery Prevention

Ensuring low-dose blood thinners (prophylaxis) are administered after every C-section or major surgery — stopping clots before they start.

What Drives Us

Mission, Vision & Values

Our Mission

To reduce the occurrence and devastating impact of life-threatening blood clot disorders through community education, direct financial assistance for diagnostics, patient advocacy, and systemic legislative change.

Our Vision

A world where no patient — regardless of race, income, or zip code — is turned away from a life-saving diagnosis. Where the D-dimer test is standard. Where Black maternal health is protected. Where blood clots are caught in time.

Our Values

Equity in healthcare access. Unyielding patient advocacy. Radical transparency. Community-first action. Honoring the lives lost by saving the lives ahead.

The Problem

Blood Clots Are the Silent Epidemic No One Is Talking About

Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) — which includes Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE) — is responsible for approximately 25% of all deaths worldwide. Yet it remains one of the most underdiagnosed and undertreated conditions in emergency medicine.

Black women face a significantly higher risk of pregnancy-associated blood clots and are disproportionately dismissed in emergency settings — a deadly intersection of racial bias and medical negligence.

A simple, inexpensive D-dimer blood test can detect a forming clot. It is not currently mandated in standard emergency room blood panels. We are fighting to change that.

25% of worldwide deaths are caused by blood clots
Black women face 2x higher risk of pregnancy-related VTE
A D-dimer test costs less than $50 — and can save a life
Most patients are dismissed 2–3 times before diagnosis
